About the trip

Mystery lake, Roopkund & Kauri Pass (Lord Curzon’s Trail)
This trip to the Garhwal region in state of Uttarakhand also called ‘Dev Bhoomi’ or land of the gods takes you on a remote trail discovered by an English lord many years ago. This trail has been named after him .

For many years, Roopkund the mystery lake has held the attention of trekkers because of the bones and skeletons that can be seen in its waters. This high altitude lake has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries and has attracted tourists from all over the globe over the years. The trek to Roopkund takes one through some of the best terrain in the Garhwal Himalayas.

Next stage on this trek takes you to another fabulous destination – Kuari Pass. Though not very high by Himalayan standards, it offers the most stunning views of some of the famous Himalayan peaks. Like of Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Hathi-Ghodi, Kamet, Dronagiri, etc. The beauty of the region is best described by the famous explorer Eric Shipton, who said, “A vision of such beauty is worth a world of striving.” Towards the end a rafting trip on the holy Ganges, a river worshiped by millions of Indians and visit to Rishikesh, the spiritual capital of the country made popular by the band ‘Beatles’ adds just the right flavour to the trip.

DAY 02: HARIDWAR - GHUTTU (drive / 5-6 hrs)

Arrive early at the Haridwar station and from here drive to Ghuttu. This journey would take about four and a half hours. From here we drive to the small village of Ghuttu. This drive will take about 5-6 hours. Overnight in tents/guesthouse (depending upon availability)

DAY 03: GHUTTU - REEH (2130m, trek / 4 hrs)

Our trek starts from Ghuttu. Today we can afford to start late as the walk is short. The trail initially cuts through terraced fields to Deolang village. From there it's an easy climb through the forest to Reeh. Overnight in tents/guesthouse (depending upon availability)

DAY 04: REEH - GANGI (2590m, trek / 4-5 hrs)

The day begins with a steep climb after which the trail gradually flattens out to reach Gangi. En route we pass Nerlan. From Gangi, one gets fabulous views of the Panwali ridge. Gangi is a fairly big village. One can visit the local temple here. Overnight in tents/guesthouse (depending upon availability)

DAY 05: GANGI - KHARSOLI (2890m, 6-7 hrs)

It’s a fairly long walk today. The trail drops to Deokhri Channi, a temporary settlement for the villagers from Gangi. From here we walk through the forest to a point where the trail forks, just beyond the Kalyani stream. The left trail leads to the high altitude lake of Sahastratal (4872 m) while we continue walking straight to an open area known locally as Birodh. Legend has it that this place was either the site of the old Gangi village or a meeting place for all the Bhilong villagers. From here the trail leads to Kharsoli, a large meadow surrounded by giant conifers and oaks, and an ideal camping place. Overnight in tents

DAY 06: KHARSOLI - KHATLING CAVE (3650m, trek / 4-5 hrs)

From the camp the trail follows the river and enters a mixed forest area to reach Bhelbagi, a shepherd encampment. From here we walk towards another encampment at Tamakund cave in an area known for its wild flowers. From there it is just a couple of hours walk to the Khatling cave, close to the Khatling glacier. Overnight in tents

DAY 07: KHATLING CAVE - KHATLING GLACIER (3710m) - CHOWKI (3400m, trek 6-7 hrs)
Today one could walk up to the zero point on the Khatling glacier and from there walk towards Chowki or retrace steps for some distance and cross the river to reach Chowki. Former is a long walk taking 6-7 hrs while the latter is a short 2 hrs walk. Chowki is a beautiful meadow and a great camping site. For those choosing to walk up to the glacier, their effort would be rewarded with a fine Himalayan panorama around the glacier. Also there are a number of spectacular hanging glaciers above the main glacial floor. Overnight in tents.

DAY 08: CHOWKI - MARSAR TAL (4590m) - CHOWKI (3400m, trek 7-8 hrs)
This is a long day. As we ascend we get a spectacular view of high mountains like Thalay Sagar, Jaonli, Kirti Stambh and Bharte Khunta rising above the Phatling glacier. Its an exhausting walk up to the beautiful lake of Marsar tal. We rest and soak in the wonderful views before heading back to the camp. Overnight in tents

DAY 11: GANGI - GHUTTU (1520m, trek / 2-3 hrs) - NEW TEHRI (2000m, drive /3 -4 hrs)

DAY 12: NEW TEHRI - RISHIKESH - NEW DELHI (drive / 2-3 hrs, train 4.5 hrs)
After breakfast we drive down via the famously controversial Tehri dam and the foothills to the spiritual capital of the country, Rishikesh. Rishikesh is situated by the holy Ganges and is known for its yoga centres, ghats (holy bathing areas) and ashrams (resting places for pilgrims). Today we will do a stretch of rafting on the Ganges and have picnic lunch en route. The rafting will last for a couple of hours and is through class III rapids (suitable for first timers also). Towards evening we drive to Haridwar (40 mins) to catch the Shatabdi Express train for Delhi. We arrive in Delhi by 22:40 hrs.
