About the trip
Garhwal, as lots of trekking connoisseurs would testify is surely the finest place for trekking in India but for some inexplicable reason it doesn’t attract as many trekkers. This ensures that there aren’t too many people walking the trails in this region. This trek is one such best kept secret. So if you’re looking at a remote trail leading to varied mountain terrain with not too many people for company, this one is for you.
We start our trek from a point a couple of kms ahead of Ghutu village and move up from here crossing beautiful forests, alpine meadows and some interesting villages with Hindu temples to reach Khatling cave. From here we walk to the zero point on the Khatling glacier to appreciate the beauty of high mountain terrain. From the glacier we cross over to the other side to reach Chowki, an absolute gem of a place. With meadows and Himalayan peaks all around it’s great camping place and one can spend days here. From Chowki we ascend over a slightly tricky terrain to reach the high lake, Marsar Tal (4590m). En route we get a spectacular view of high mountains like Thalay Sagar, Jaonli, Kirti Stambh and Bharte Khunta rising above the Phatling glacier.
