Berijam is the most beautiful lake in all of South India claim
a lot of people who have visited this pristine piece of heaven. Originally discovered by the British & Spanish people, this place was a swamp 80 -100 years ago. It has been converted into a lake with catchments areas around the lake. The lake itself is situated at a very high altitude, just a couple of hundred feet below Kodaikanal.

The Kukkal caves are actually overhanging slabs of rocks. This rock shelter is at an altitude of 1500 m. The caves reveal traces of the Paliyan tribes who had settled here and used to wear leaf clothing. Over viewing the caves is Manjampatti valley known for its Bison population.

The Plan:

Day 0: Take the Bus or train to Kodai

Day 1: Reach Kodai and travel to Mannavannur. We will be using Mannavannur as the base camp for the next 3 days. Today we will relax and find our bearings around the beautiful locale of Mannavannur. We will be staying in cottages that overlook the sheep station. The views are of pocket Sholas and grass lands all around. Walk for a couple of hours exploring some of the trails.

Day 2: Start at 6 a.m. to Berijam. The walk is along forest roads more or less flat. We will carry packed breakfast and lunch. The walk will take approx 4 hrs to reach the lake. Once u reach the lake it is up to u to chill and spend time around the lake, or. For those who want to explore we can walk to Capsfly which is another 1 hr from Berijam, defy the law of gravity here,. Throw your cap off the cliff and it will come back to you, believe it??

Back to Mannavannur. Total distance covered 24 kms over rolling hills.

Day 3: Today we will walk to Kukkal lake and time permitting to the caves. It will be a combination of forest roads and ridge walking with some amazing views of the plains. As compared to day 2, day 3 will be a little tougher with reasonable ascents and descents. As usual we will carry packed lunch.

Back to Mannavannur. Distance covered 20 kms

Day 4: Today will be a lazy day around the campsite. One can try their hand at chocolate making or clay modeling. Or just put your feet up and laze around till it is time for departure.

Night bus or train back to Bangalore.
